Larry is a lifelong resident of Cole County born just outside of Jefferson City, Missouri during the baby boom era. Rural landscape settings and reflective Americana is apparent in many of Larry’s paintings. He often paints of days gone by in a setting of rustic rural architecture or of flora and fauna capturing mood and color in a narrative scene. His love of the outdoors shows up in many of his landscapes where the skies often take center stage. Golden sunrises or a contrasting shadowy sunset plays on the elements of his sometimes-comical composition.
Larry is a self-taught artist. His compositional theme begins with a central character then combines complementary objects sometimes juxtaposed items that may lead into a series. Each painting should make the viewer pause and inject his own storyline to the scene captured in a single frame. Working primarily in acrylics, Larry has worked in pointillism pen and ink and watercolor.
“I choose to do paintings in which color harmonies and mood set the scene.”
Mr. Carver was president of the Jefferson City Art Club 2015-16 and has won several awards in their art shows and is a current Board Member at Capital Arts. In 2010 he won that year’s Merit Award. He also has been juried into MOAK - Regional art competition in 2010 and 2012. In 2012 he won a Cash Merit Award. A quote from Edgar Degas, French impressionist, “Art is not what you see it’s what you make others see”.
I often try to paint with a limited palette to capture fauna and flora with the camouflage and habitat of their surrounds. Feathers and fur are wonderful! Multiple photographs are used to compose a narrative scene capturing mood and color. My love of the outdoors take center stage and sometimes a dynamic day or night sky provides tone for the background. Golden sunrises or a contrasting shadowy sunset plays on the elements of many of my sometimes-comical composition.
Each painting should make the viewer pause and inject his own storyline to the scene captured in a single frame. I continue my art education almost daily via online. I love to watch other artist paint. Developing a background in art history is essential to see what paintings survived the wrath of critics and the attention of collectors.
